William “Billy” Murphy Jr.’s passion and fighting spirit for the law came from his father William H. Murphy Sr. who was one of the first Black judges to preside in Baltimore and Maryland. The elder Murphy was a strong civil rights supporter and was the test case for integration at the University of Maryland Law School.
In 1980, Murphy followed in his father’s footsteps serving as a judge of the Circuit Court for Baltimore City from 1980 to 1983 before he returned to being a practicing attorney which he considers his true passion.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in your career?
The value of being more prepared than your opponent.
What’s been your biggest success?
I have genius lawyers Richard V. Falcon, Esq. and William H. “Hassan” Murphy III, Esq. as law partners for most of my career.
Who have been the biggest mentors in your career?
Genius lawyers Leroy W. Carroll, Esq., George L. Russell Sr., Esq. and Arnold Weiner, Esq.
What are your hopes for the state or your community this year?
Long term, reduce racism and bigotry in America to a level that is no longer a barrier to the regeneration and success of women and people of color in the U.S. and other countries. In the short term, defeating Donald Trump, who has recently and repeatedly promised to turn America into a fascist country.
