Take Racism Out of Healthcare

Black and Latino Texans are overrepresented in low-wage jobs and are less likely to have health insurance. Generations of housing discrimination, resource deprivation, and poor access to healthcare have produced deep-seated underlying health problems. Expanding Medicaid is the first step we need to take to start righting the wrongs of our nation’s racist past.

TOP calls on Harris County judges to release people from jails due to COVID-19

About 87 percent of people in the Harris County Jail, where COVID-19 cases are increasing, have not been convicted of a crime and are only in jail because they can’t afford bail.

Our judges are criminalizing poverty, which disproportionately affects communities of color. We need your support to save people’s lives and return them home to their families to await their trial and reduce their exposure to this deadly virus.

To build transformative communities, we must perform transformative acts of liberation. Cash bail is one of the aspects of the justice system that keeps communities of color oppressed and in debt.

Do you have a loved one or know someone who is incarcerated in the Bexar County Jail unable to afford bail? We are coordinating with the National Bail Project to secure the freedom of as many of our neighbors as we can. We accept referrals from anyone in the community who knows someone who is being held pretrial.

Bail fund recipients must meet the following criteria:

– Must have a safe, verifiable address
– Must have a good contact phone number to verify address after release
– Bond must be $5,000 or less
– No warrants or holds

TOP also provides opportunities to join the fight in ending mass incarceration for community members, and those we bail out to support their growth and build a base of leaders who have experienced incarceration. Rest in power, Isaac Henry

Last week, the Texas Organization Project said goodbye to one of our organization’s most dedicated, energetic and impassioned leaders, Isaac Henry of Dallas after a courageous battle against COVID-19.

It was our honor to bring together our members and staff to give our final farewell in a virtual memorial ceremony via Zoom on Friday where we shared our treasured memories of him, recalled his contributions to the movement, and celebrated his life.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Isaac’s family during this time of mourning. We will be forever grateful to have been graced with his spirit, compassion and fight.
