Equatorial Guinea

Located in the heart of Africa, the tiny nation of Equatorial Guinea is formally known as the Republic of Equatorial Guinea. The area has been inhabited by native peoples since prehistoric times, thus its history goes back quite a ways. However, modern records of the country’s history do not begin until European explorers arrived.

Bioko and Annobón, two islands that are now a part of Equatorial Guinea, were discovered by the Portuguese navigator Ferno do Pó in the 15th century. The Portuguese established a colony on these islands in the 16th century as a slave and ivory trade outpost.

Colonialism and the Fight for Independence

Several European countries colonized the territory now known as Equatorial Guinea. The islands were transferred to Spain in the 18th century, at which point the Spanish renamed it Spanish Guinea. The Spanish colonizers exploited the land and its riches by planting cocoa trees and coffee beans.

The fight for freedom was sparked by the rise of nationalist groups in the middle of the twentieth century. Even after the Spanish government recognized Equatorial Guinea as a province in 1959, the yearning for independence continued to grow. After a long struggle, Equatorial Guinea won its independence from Spain in 1968.

Difficulties and Uncertainty in Politics After Independence

Many difficulties, including political instability and authoritarian government, have plagued Equatorial Guinea since its independence. Francisco Macas Nguema took power as the country’s first president and reigned repressively. His government was notorious for its repressive policies, economic ineptitude, and violations of basic human rights.

Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo took over from Macas Nguema in a military coup in 1979. Obiang’s dictatorship retained a firm grip on power despite calls for democratic changes, and charges of corruption and human rights violations remained.

The Oil Boom and Economic Expansion

The discovery of oil deposits in the 1990s and 2000s propelled Equatorial Guinea’s economy to new heights. Foreign investment and tax income were both greatly increased as a result of the country’s thriving oil sector. However, income disparity and corruption were also exacerbated by this influx of cash.

There have been attempts to wean the economy off of its reliance on oil. To raise people’s level of living, money has been put into better roads, schools, and hospitals. However, there are still obstacles to achieving sustainable growth and a fair distribution of income.

Future Prospects and Present Difficulties

On its way to progress, Equatorial Guinea nevertheless faces a number of obstacles. The country’s oil wealth has not prevented widespread poverty and inequality. Political freedom is restricted, and there is little accountability at the highest levels of government.
