Afghanistan is a country located in South Asia, bordered by Pakistan to the south and east, Iran to the west, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan to the north, and China to the far northeast. The country has a rich history and cultural heritage, and has been inhabited for thousands of years.

The earliest known civilization in Afghanistan was the Indus Valley Civilization, which flourished around 2500 BCE. During this time, Afghanistan was home to a number of major cities, including what is now known as Kandahar, Herat, and Kabul.

Throughout its history, Afghanistan has been invaded and conquered by a number of different empires, including the Achaemenid Empire, the Alexander the Great’s Greek Empire, the Maurya Empire, and the Mongol Empire. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Afghanistan was a buffer state between the British and Russian empires, and was eventually invaded by the Soviet Union in 1979.

The Soviet occupation of Afghanistan lasted until 1989, and was followed by a civil war between various factions vying for control of the country. In 1996, the Taliban, a hardline Islamic extremist group, seized control of Afghanistan and ruled until 2001, when they were overthrown by a U.S.-led coalition in response to the September 11th attack.
